The Speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah has finally breathed his last.
In a statement through his Twitter page, President Yoweri Museveni announced the death of the Speaker.
“Countrymen and Countrywomen. It is with a lot of sadness that I announce the death of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament. I got information of this sad news at 10.30am, East African time from People that have been with him and the doctor that was caring for him in the intensive care unit,” the president tweeted.
He added, “He was a good Cadre. I delayed the announcement so that his children would be informed first. May His soul rest in eternal peace.”
Oulanyah has been hospitalised since February 3, 2022 when he left Uganda on a chartered Uganda Airlines Flight UR 2, plane registration number 5x-NIL to the US in a very critical state.
The Chief Justice, Alfonso Owiny-Dollo, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, Democratic Party president Norbert Mao and Oulanyah’s brother Francis Emuna left the country on Tuesday to check on the Speaker’s health.
Omoro County Member of Parliament, Hon Jacob Oulanyah was elected the Speaker of the 11th Parliament replacing Rt.Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.
Oulanyah was elected Speaker at the First Sitting of the 11th Parliament held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Monday, 24 May 2021.
Oulanyah polled 310 votes followed by Kadaga who got 197 votes with Kira Municipality MP, Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda getting 15 votes.
Since then, he has chaired very few parliamentary sessions because he has always been ill.
